See which of their questions bring up your brand, and which bring up a rival. ### AEO tracking shows whether AI answer engines mention your brand, cite your URLs, or recommend your competitors. AEOTrack asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok the questions your buyers ask, with live web search on, in a fresh session. Each answer is stored so you can read exactly what was said, who was named, and which sources the engine relied on. Free AEO audit No account. Results in about a minute. [→](https://www.aeotrack.io/audit) What you get ## Five things you learn about your business Every one is read from real answers the engines gave to the questions your buyers ask. 01 ### Who AI names instead Which brands the five engines recommend when it is not you, and your share of voice against the competitors you name. 02 ### Which sources decide your category The roundups, review sites and forums the engines cite for your questions: the short list you need to be on. 03 ### Weekly score with its ± range A 0–100 visibility score, re-checked weekly with a range like 62 ±8, so you can tell a real move from noise. 04 ### One thing to do this week A plan built from what the engines said and read: the listing to earn, the page to answer. [How the plan works](https://www.aeotrack.io/blog/six-week-plan-to-raise-ai-visibility-score). 05 ### A message when it really changes A weekly email digest, and a Slack or Teams alert when your score drops beyond the normal wobble. [Alerts](https://www.aeotrack.io/integrations). We don't sell llms.txt magic. We show which sites AI reads, and help you get onto them. AI engines name the businesses that other sites recommend. So the plan points you at the review sites, roundups and forums each engine actually read for your questions. [How we measure it](https://www.aeotrack.io/methodology). How it works ## From your website to who AI names, in about 7 minutes Three steps, no technical skills required: your first answers arrive about 7 minutes after you add your website (the median for new accounts). - ### Add your site and questions Enter your URL. We read your homepage, suggest the questions your buyers ask and the topics to track, and run the first check across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok: one live answer per engine per question, with web search on. - ### See who was named For every question, per engine: you, a rival, or nobody, with the answer text and the pages the engine cited. A question no engine answers with any business is advice-only and left out of the score. AEO (questions) and GEO (topics) are scored separately. - ### Do one thing a week Each week you get one specific thing to do, taken from the answers and the sites the engines read: usually getting onto a page that recommends your rivals. Then read what changed after the next weekly check. Built for teams and agencies ## Your week in AI answers, on one screen The fixes to make this week, ranked by how often each issue shows up in your answers. ### Reports & exports Weekly reports you can share with your team or clients. ### Integrations Connect the tools you already use. [See integrations](https://www.aeotrack.io/integrations) ### Agency workspaces Track up to 10 client sites on the Agency plan. [For agencies](https://www.aeotrack.io/for-agencies) ## Read the answer behind every number Three things you can check for yourself behind every number on this page. ### Real answers, not simulations Five engines with live web search on, one answer per engine per question every week. The answer text sits behind every number, so you can read what the engine said. [How the score is calculated](https://www.aeotrack.io/methodology). ### Who was named instead For every question, the rival the engine named instead of you and the page that recommendation came from. The free audit shows every rival two engines named for one question, with their full answers and the pages they read; your other questions and all five engines come with the trial. ### One thing to do this week Not a list of everything wrong: the one listing or page to go after, from the sites the engines read. Every one of these — and 19 more on billing, privacy, scoring and the optimization tools — is answered in full on our [complete FAQ](https://www.aeotrack.io/faq). ### What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of optimizing your website content so that AI-powered search engines — like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Grok — can find, understand, and cite your content in their generated answers. Unlike traditional SEO which focuses on ranking in link-based results, AEO ensures your brand appears when users ask AI assistants questions about your industry. ### How is this different from traditional SEO tools? Traditional SEO tools focus on Google's link-based results — rankings, backlinks, keywords. AEOTrack focuses on AI-generated answers (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok), which capture a growing share of search. We measure whether AI engines cite your content and help you optimize for machine comprehension and citation — not just classic SEO. ### What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)? The practice of optimizing for inclusion in AI-generated topic overviews and synthesis responses. Where AEO targets specific query citations, GEO targets category-level brand presence in broader AI-generated content. Measured by Overview Presence Rate and Synthesis Depth. AEOTrack tracks both AEO and GEO in one platform. ### How do I track my brand in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok? Ask each engine the questions your buyers actually ask, store the full answers, and record two things separately: whether the answer names your brand, and whether it cites one of your URLs as a source. Repeat the same questions on a schedule so results are comparable. AEOTrack (aeotrack.io) automates this across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok with live queries and stored answers you can read. ### Which AI engines do you track? We track the five major AI answer engines: OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, Perplexity AI and xAI's Grok. Each is called through its API with live web search on, in a fresh session with no chat history, memory or sign-in. Your own chat is personalised and varies from ask to ask, so it can answer differently; the [methodology page explains why](https://www.aeotrack.io/methodology#own-chat). All five run on every plan and on the trial. We add new engines as they gain market share. ### What is AI share of voice? Share of voice is your mentions as a proportion of all tracked brands' mentions across the same set of AI answers, so it moves when your position genuinely changes rather than when you add more questions. Compare it on the same questions, not on separate ones: tracking more competitors pushes it down without your visibility changing. ### How often do AI answers change? Often enough that one check is a reading, not a trend. AI answers are non-deterministic and change between checks, so AEOTrack reports every score with a range — the range to expect between two checks — and judges movement against it: a move inside the range is normal variation. ### How do I improve my visibility in AI answers? Start from the sources: every AI answer is assembled from pages the engine trusts. Read the stored answers for your questions, list the sources cited twice or more, and earn presence on those exact pages — roundups, comparison articles, review sites and community threads. On your own site, answer the real questions directly, add FAQ and Organization schema, and keep one canonical page per topic. Track weekly so you can see which changes moved the numbers. ### Is there a free AEO checker I can use without signing up? Yes. The free AEO audit at aeotrack.io/audit needs no account. Enter your website and work email to see whether ChatGPT and Perplexity named you for a question your buyers ask, every business they named instead, with a link to its own site when the answer gave one, their full answers and the pages they read, with a link to ask the same question yourself, plus a separate site hygiene check of your homepage. The fix steps, your other buyer questions and ongoing tracking come with the 7-day free trial or a paid plan. Results in about a minute. ### How does aeotrack.io track AI visibility? AEOTrack (aeotrack.io) queries ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Grok with keywords relevant to your business, then reports whether your brand, content, or URLs appear in the responses. You get an AI visibility score, citation counts per engine, and a plan ordered by how often each issue shows up in your answers. ### Do I need technical skills to use aeotrack.io? No. AEOTrack is built for marketers, content creators, and business owners. Paste your website URL for a free AEO audit; the action plan gives plain-language recommendations. The FAQ Schema Generator and other tools produce copy-paste-ready outputs. ### Is there a free plan? There's a 7-day free trial on the Starter plan's limits, with daily checks and no credit card required: 1 website, 25 tracked questions, 10 topics, 10 competitors and 15 on-demand re-checks for all 7 days, with every tracked question and topic checked daily while you use it. Onboarding sets up 10 questions to start; you can add up to 25. The trial lasts 7 days from when you add your website, not from sign-up. At the end of the trial, choose a paid plan to keep tracking; nothing is charged automatically. Each website gets one free trial, so a website that has already had one gets no second trial: choose a plan, or, when another workspace already tracks the website, use Request access to ask its owner to invite you. There's no permanent free tier: real checks mean real queries against paid AI APIs, one live answer per engine per question, with web search on. The free AEO audit asks for your website and work email and shows the result in about a minute, without an account. ### What does AEO tracking software do? AEO tracking software monitors whether AI answer engines mention your brand, cite your URLs, or recommend your competitors. AEOTrack queries ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Grok with your keywords, calculates the AI visibility score, GEO overview presence rates and citation counts, and provides a plan ordered by how often each issue shows up in your answers. AEO tracking is the discipline of measuring exactly that — and turning the data into actionable insights so you can become a source that AI systems trust and cite. AEOTrack (aeotrack.io) is an AEO tracking and optimization platform. You add your website and the keywords that matter to your business; we query the major AI engines with those keywords and report whether your brand or content was mentioned or cited. You get a visibility score, citation breakdown by engine, and recommendations so you can improve your presence in AI-generated answers. Why it matters ## Why AEO tracking matters A growing share of search behavior happens inside AI assistants. Users ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Claude for recommendations, definitions, and comparisons. When an AI cites your brand or links to your content, you gain visibility and trust; when it doesn't, you're effectively invisible for those queries. AEO tracking tells you where you stand today: which questions you are already named for, which engines cite you, and where you're missing. Without tracking, you're optimizing in the dark. The process ## How AEO tracking works AEO tracking works by sending questions your customers might ask to AI engines, then analyzing the responses to see if your brand, domain, or specific URLs are mentioned or cited: - You define what to track: your domain, key pages, and a set of queries that matter for your business. - The tool queries AI engines: AEOTrack sends those queries to ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, Perplexity, and Grok. - Responses are analyzed: the tool checks whether your brand name, domain, or URLs appear in the answer or cited sources. - You get metrics and reports: visibility score, inclusion rate, citation count, and a per-engine breakdown. Coverage ## Which AI engines can you track? - ### OpenAI ChatGPT Used by millions for research, recommendations, and Q&A. - ### Google Gemini Google's AI assistant, integrated into Search and other products. - ### Anthropic Claude Widely used for long-form answers and analysis. - ### Perplexity Search-oriented AI that frequently cites web sources. - ### Grok xAI's real-time AI with deep integration into X (Twitter) search. What to measure ## Key metrics in AEO tracking - ### Visibility score A 0–100 number reflecting how often your brand appears in AI answers. - ### Inclusion rate The percentage of queries where your brand or URL appears at least once. - ### Citation count How many times your URLs are explicitly cited as sources. - ### Per-engine breakdown Visibility split across all major AI engines. Compared ## AEO tracking vs SEO SEO focuses on ranking in traditional search engine results pages — primarily Google's blue links. AEO focuses on being included and cited in AI-generated answers. Both matter: strong SEO often supports AEO because AI systems rely on similar quality signals. But AEO tracking specifically measures your presence inside AI answers. Compared ## AEO vs GEO: what's the difference? As AI search has matured, two distinct visibility patterns have emerged — and both need tracking: - AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) — measures whether AI engines cite your brand in direct answers to specific keyword queries. Example: "Which CRM is best for startups?" — does an AI mention your product? - GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — measures whether your content is featured in broad topic overviews synthesised by AI engines. Example: "Explain modern CRM strategies" — does your content shape the AI's synthesis? AEO and GEO are complementary. AEO earns you citations on competitive queries; GEO builds authority in topic-level synthesis. AEOTrack supports both: switch between AEO mode for keyword-level citation tracking and GEO mode for topic presence tracking — all in the same dashboard. See [GEO tracking](https://www.aeotrack.io/geo-tracking). GEO tools in AEOTrack: Topic Tracker (monitor overview presence by topic), GEO Audit (analyze your content's synthesis readiness), GEO Overview Discovery (find which topics your competitors dominate), and GEO Reports (track overview presence rate and synthesis depth over time). Get started ## How to get started with AEO tracking For the full step-by-step process — question selection, per-engine checks, the named-vs-cited distinction and how to read the results — see the companion guide: [How to Track AEO](https://www.aeotrack.io/how-to-track-aeo). - Define your scope: your main domain, key pages, and 10–20 queries your audience asks. - Run a free baseline: paste any URL at [aeotrack.io/audit](https://www.aeotrack.io/audit). - Set up ongoing tracking: add your domain and keywords in AEOTrack for weekly automated checks. - Act on recommendations: optimize content, add FAQ schema, and improve internal linking based on your results. AEO tracking is the practice of measuring whether your brand, content, or URLs appear in AI-generated answers from engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok. Tools like AEOTrack (aeotrack.io) query these engines with your keywords and report visibility scores, citation counts, and which pages get cited. ### How does AEO tracking work? AEO tracking tools send queries to AI engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok), then analyze responses to see if your brand or domain is mentioned or cited. You get a visibility score, inclusion rate, citation count, and per-engine breakdown. AEOTrack automates this at aeotrack.io. ### Which AI engines can I track for AEO? You can track visibility across OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, Perplexity, and Grok. AEOTrack (aeotrack.io) supports all five and reports per-engine visibility and citation data in one dashboard. ### How to measure AEO performance? Measure AEO by tracking visibility score (how often AI engines mention your brand), inclusion rate (percentage of queries where you appear), and citation count (how many times your URLs are cited). AEOTrack provides these metrics at aeotrack.io across all major AI engines. ### What is the difference between AEO and GEO? AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) tracks whether AI engines cite your brand in direct answers to specific keyword queries. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) tracks whether your content is featured when AI engines generate broad topic overviews. AEOTrack supports both modes. ### Is there a free AEO score checker? Yes. The free audit at aeotrack.io/audit reads your homepage, runs a site hygiene check of it, and asks two AI engines one question your buyers ask, then shows who they named: you, a competitor, or nobody. No account, about a minute. If you start a trial, that question is carried into your account. ### What is the difference between AEO and SEO? SEO optimizes for traditional search engine results pages (SERPs). AEO optimizes for AI-generated answers. AEO tracking measures whether your brand is cited in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Grok — not just ranked in Google. See how your site performs in AI answers — start your 7-day free trial, no credit card required. Search used to end in a list of links, so tracking meant recording a position. An AI answer ends in a paragraph. There is no position 1 to hold — the answer either names you or it doesn't, and it either used your page to write itself or it didn't. Those are two separate facts and they move independently, so AEOTrack records them separately. Metric | What it tells you Mention rate | How often answers name your brand at all Citation rate | How often an engine used one of your URLs as its source Position prominence | Whether you lead the answer or appear in a closing list Share of voice | Who gets named instead of you, and how often Per-engine split | Which of the five engines have you and which have never heard of you The per-engine split is the one that surprises people most. It is entirely normal for a brand to be named in six of eleven ChatGPT answers and in zero Gemini, Claude and Perplexity answers for the same questions. A tracker that samples one engine reports one engine's opinion as though it were the market's. ## Why every score carries a range Ask any engine the same question twice in an afternoon and you can get two different lists. A score built from a single answer per engine can move with nothing changed on your site. So a bare number is a false reading, and AEOTrack shows the range to expect between two checks alongside every score: a move inside it is noise, a real move is one outside the range, and it narrows as the sample grows. Two consequences follow, and they are the reason the product works the way it does. Checks run weekly, because daily checking mostly measures that jitter and teaches you to react to it. And branded questions — ones containing your own name — are scored separately, because they inflate every metric and flatter every report. ## How AEOTrack tracks AEO ### 1. A question set that looks like your buyers Ten to twenty questions a real buyer would type, mostly without your brand in them. The tracker suggests a starting set from your site, and you edit it — the questions are the measurement instrument, so they should be yours. ### 2. Every question, on every engine, on a schedule ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok, re-run weekly. Full answers are stored, not just a yes/no, so you can read what the engine actually said and see which sources it leaned on. ### 3. Sources, competitors and gaps Every cited domain is collected. Sources cited repeatedly that never mention you are your content gap, stated concretely: these are the pages an engine trusts on your topic, and you are not on them. Who was named instead: the demo workspace's share-of-voice view. ### 4. A weekly summary of what changed After each run you get the score movement, the questions newly won and newly lost, who overtook you, and one concrete fix — so the tracking produces a decision rather than a dashboard. ## What AEO tracking software records on each check Each time a question is asked, the software keeps the same few facts, so one week can be compared with the next: - Naming: whether your business name appears in the text of the answer. - Citation links: when an engine lists its sources, whether your domain is among them. Being cited and being named are different results, and both are recorded. - Engine differences: each engine runs its own search, reads its own pages and writes its own answer, so one can name you while another leaves you out. A combined figure hides that, which is why each engine is stored and reported separately. - History: the answer text is kept, so you can read what an engine said on an earlier date. ## A readable homepage is not the same as being named The [free audit](https://www.aeotrack.io/audit) does two things: it asks ChatGPT and Perplexity one question a buyer would ask, and it scores how easy your homepage is for AI tools to read. The homepage check is about the page, not about visibility. A site can score well and still be left out of the answer, because an engine names the businesses it finds on the pages it retrieves for the question: roundups, comparison posts, review sites and community threads. Only the stored answers show whether you were named, and who was named when you were not. ## Checking by hand versus tracking software Typing questions into chat windows works once. As a weekly habit it breaks down: - Personalisation: chat history and saved preferences shape answers, so a personal account can show mentions a clean session does not. - Time: five engines and twenty buyer questions are a hundred separate runs, every week. - No history: manual checks rarely end up anywhere you can compare over 30 or 90 days. - Drifting wording: small changes of phrasing between sessions make the comparison unreliable. Tracking software asks the same questions of every engine on a schedule and records, for each answer, whether it named the business and whether it linked the site. With that record a team can read the exact questions where it was left out, see which competitors were named instead, look at the sources the engines read, and follow whether naming changes after it updates its pages or public listings. [Manual tracking versus a tracker](https://www.aeotrack.io/blog/manual-aeo-tracking-vs-a-tracker-the-math) works through the arithmetic. ## AEO rank tracking: where you land inside each answer "Rank" still exists in AI answers, it just means something different. When an engine lists five tools or five agencies, the order matters: the first name gets read and the fifth often does not. So for every stored answer AEOTrack records whether you were named, at what position in the answer, and whether your page was cited, per engine, and keeps that history week by week. Position feeds the score through prominence, so moving from fifth to second in ChatGPT's list shows up even when the mention rate is unchanged. Two things make AEO rank tracking different from keyword rank tracking. First, there is no single ranking: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok each give their own answer, and it is normal to be second in one and absent from another. Second, the same question can produce a different order on the next run, so a position is read across several answers and alongside the ± range, not from one screenshot. On Pro and above, the SERP monitor adds the classic Google positions for the same questions, so you can see AI answers and blue links side by side. ## AEO tracker vs rank tracker | Rank tracker | AEO tracker Unit | Keyword | Question Result | A position in a list | A written answer Reading | One number | A rate with a ± range Surface | One search engine | Five answer engines that disagree Source signal | Your ranking URL | Every domain the answer cited, including the ones that beat you ## Start with the free trial The fastest way to see where you stand is the [free 7-day trial](https://www.aeotrack.io/signup): add a domain and the first run scores it for AI readiness — schema, structure, depth, crawlability — and runs a live visibility check across five engines. If the score is low, the audit tells you which specific things to fix first; if it is high and you are still invisible in answers, that is a different and more interesting problem, and the tracker is what diagnoses it. Ongoing tracking starts at [$39 a month](https://www.aeotrack.io/pricing) and includes the weekly checks across all five engines, daily checks on three pinned questions, citation tracking, competitors and the improvement plan. ## Frequently asked ### What is an AEO tracker? A tool that measures whether AI answer engines name your brand when someone asks a question in your category, and whether they cite your pages as the source — by asking a fixed question set on a schedule and storing every answer. ### How is an AEO tracker different from a rank tracker? A rank tracker reports a position in a list of links for a keyword. An AEO tracker reports whether you appear inside a written answer, where in that answer you land, and whether the engine used your page as its source. There is no position 1 to hold: an AI answer either names you or it does not, and the same question can produce different answers on different runs, which is why an AEO tracker reports a rate with a range (the range to expect between two checks) rather than a single rank. ### Which engines should it cover? ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok at minimum. They disagree with each other often enough that partial coverage is misleading rather than merely incomplete. ### How often should I track? Weekly for most brands. Daily tracking of a small pinned set is worth it where answers genuinely move day to day — launches, news cycles. Starter monitors your 3 most important questions daily, Pro 10, Agency 25, and Enterprise everything. ### What does an AEO tracking score mean? AEOTrack's score combines three things measured from the stored answers: whether you are present at all, how prominent your position is inside the answer, and whether the engine cited your domain as a source. Every score carries a ± range, the range to expect between two checks, derived from the sample size, because a rate measured over a few dozen answers is an estimate, not a reading. ### Can I track AEO for free? The [trial](https://www.aeotrack.io/signup) is free for 7 days from when you add your website and needs no card. Ongoing weekly tracking with history, competitors and citations is what the paid plans cover. ### Does AEOTrack track Perplexity and Claude? Yes. Every tracked question is asked of ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok on the same schedule, and the answer from each engine is stored and scored separately. Perplexity and Claude are search-grounded in the check, so what is recorded is what those assistants answer with live retrieval, not a memorised guess. The per-engine split shows which of the five name you and which never do. ### How do I track how often my company is cited in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity? Write down the questions a buyer in your category asks, then ask each engine those questions on a fixed schedule and record two facts per answer: was the brand named, and was one of its pages used as a source. AEOTrack does this for you across five engines and keeps the history, so a citation that appears or disappears shows up as a change rather than an anecdote. The 7-day trial gives the first reading on the day you add the domain. ### What is the alternative to tracking AEO by hand? Tracking by hand means pasting the same questions into ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok one at a time and noting the result in a spreadsheet. It works once and breaks as a habit: answers drift with phrasing and time, there is no history, and nobody re-runs it weekly. The alternative is a fixed question set run on a schedule with the per-engine history kept, which is what an AEO tracker is. AEOTrack runs weekly checks on every plan, with on-demand re-checks from a monthly pool. ## See your own numbers Start a trial, add your domain, and watch the score move week over week. Named and cited are counted separately. ### The sites AI read when it named a competitor Each source, how often each engine read it, and which competitors it recommends: the list your weekly plan starts from. Both screens show the demo workspace of a fictional brand, Acme Coffee Roasters. A first score can be 0. That means no answer in the first check named you, and the result shows who was named. The score runs from 0 to 100 and is shown with a range, for example 62 ±8: the range to expect between two checks. A low first score comes with the answers behind it, so you can read who was named and where. How it works ## Three facts about the checks ### Live answers, with web search on Each engine is asked through its API in a fresh session, with live web search on, not from a model’s memory. One live answer per engine per question. ### The same questions every week Your questions stay the same and are asked again each week, so you compare one week with the next on the same questions. Questions you pin are checked daily as well. ### Who was named instead, and the sites each engine read When an answer names a competitor and not you, you see the competitor, the answer and the sites that engine read, ranked by how often each engine read them. Named and cited are counted separately, and questions and topics are scored separately. How often are the checks run? Every question is asked again every week on every plan, with one live answer per engine. Questions you pin are checked daily as well; how many you can pin depends on the plan. Which AI engines are covered? ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok on every plan and on the trial, each asked with live web search on. What happens after the trial? Five steps, the key metrics, and why manual tracking breaks. [← What is AEO Tracking?](https://www.aeotrack.io/what-is-aeo-tracking) Guide September 1, 2026 7 min read # How to Track AEO: Measure Your Brand in AI Answers The five steps to measure whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok name your brand — the metrics that matter, where manual tracking breaks down, and how to tell real movement from noise. Tracking AEO means measuring whether AI engines — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok — name your brand or cite your site when your buyers ask them questions. This guide gives you the five steps, the metrics worth recording, and the honest caveats most guides skip: answers are non-deterministic, branded questions inflate everything, and being cited is not the same as being named. ## Step 1: choose the questions buyers actually ask Pick 10–20 questions a real buyer would type into an assistant — category questions ("best group travel companies in India"), problem questions ("how do I know if AI recommends my brand"), and comparison questions. Keep at least three-quarters of them free of your brand name: a question containing your brand almost always returns your brand, and it will quietly inflate every number you track. Measure branded and non-branded separately. ## Step 2: run every question on every engine The engines disagree with each other far more than people expect — in our own tracking, one brand was named in 49% of ChatGPT answers and 0% everywhere else, because ChatGPT searches the live web while other engines lean on model memory and third-party roundups. One engine is not a sample. Store the complete answers, not a yes/no tally: the text of the answer tells you who was recommended instead and why. ## Step 3: record "named" and "cited" separately Being named means the answer text recommends your brand. Being cited means the engine retrieved one of your URLs as a source. They diverge constantly: across 446 answers we tracked for one domain, 15% of answers cited it and only 9% named it — on one engine, 22 answers cited the site and none named it. Cited-but-not-named means engines trust your content but not your brand: a positioning problem. Named-but-not-cited means the opposite. Blending them into one score hides the diagnosis. Who was named instead: the demo workspace's share-of-voice view. ## Step 4: list the sources the engines trusted Every AI answer is assembled from pages the engine already trusts — in our data, an average of 7.7 sources per answer. Collect the domains cited across your stored answers and count repeats. The roundups, comparison posts, review sites and community threads that appear again and again are your roadmap: earning a mention on those exact pages moves AI visibility faster than anything you publish on your own site. ## Step 5: re-check on a schedule, and respect the noise Ask the same engine the same question twice and you can get different brands. Single runs are noise; trends are signal. Re-run the identical question set weekly, compare against a baseline, and treat a change as real only when it moves outside the score's range, the ± that shows what to expect between two checks. Expect citations to move before naming does — engines start using your pages as evidence before they start recommending you by name. ## The metrics that matter - Mention rate — share of answers that name your brand, per engine and overall. - Citation rate — share of answers that use one of your URLs as a source. - Share of voice — who is named on your questions when you are not. - Sentiment — how the mention characterises you when it happens. - Sample count and range. The ± is what to expect between two checks. Without both, none of the above is trustworthy. ## Manual tracking, and where it breaks down You can do all of this by hand: paste each question into each engine, read the answers, log naming and citations in a spreadsheet. For a one-off snapshot it is genuinely worth doing — you will learn how the engines talk about your category. As a practice it collapses quickly: twenty questions across five engines is a hundred answers per run, weekly; the answers vary between runs so single checks mislead; and a spreadsheet cannot store the full answer text or the source lists that make the data actionable. That workload — not the difficulty — is why automated AEO tracking exists. ## Automating it AEOTrack runs exactly this process as a product: your question set queried live across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok on a weekly schedule, every answer stored and readable, naming and citation reported separately, source lists per answer, share of voice against tracked competitors, and scores published with sample counts and a range (the formula is public: [how the score is calculated](https://www.aeotrack.io/methodology)). It starts at $39/month with a [7-day free trial](https://www.aeotrack.io/signup) that needs no card; the first check scores your domain across all five engines, and the trial checks every question daily while you use it. ### What are the key metrics in AI visibility? Mention rate (how often answers name your brand), citation rate (how often your URLs are used as sources), share of voice (who is named instead of you), per-engine breakdown, and sentiment of the mention. Because AI answers are non-deterministic, honest reporting also includes a sample count and the range to expect between two checks, and separates branded from non-branded questions — questions containing your brand name inflate every metric. ### What are the alternatives to manual AEO tracking methods? Manual tracking — pasting questions into each engine and noting the answers in a spreadsheet — works for a one-off snapshot but breaks down fast: five engines times twenty questions is a hundred answers per run, answers vary between runs, and nothing is stored for comparison. The alternative is automated AEO tracking, where a platform like AEOTrack runs your question set on a schedule, stores every answer, and reports mention rate, citations and sources over time. ### How do I measure AEO performance in AI search results? Fix a question set, measure a baseline week, then track mention rate and citation rate against that baseline after each content change. Judge movement against the score's range rather than a single check: the range is what to expect between two checks, so a move inside it is normal variation. Expect citation changes to show before naming changes: engines start using your pages as sources before they start recommending you by name. ### How do enterprises handle AEO monitoring across AI platforms? Enterprises monitor the same way at larger scale: a fixed question set per product line, scheduled checks across all major engines, competitor share-of-voice tracking, and alerts when visibility moves. The additional needs are usually team access, exportable reporting and API or integration access — AEOTrack's Agency and Enterprise plans cover scheduled multi-engine monitoring, alerts, team seats and integrations. ### What strategies improve brand visibility in AI answer engines? Start from the sources: every AI answer is assembled from pages the engine trusts. Read the stored answers for your questions, list the sources cited twice or more, and earn presence on those exact pages — roundups, comparison articles, review sites and community threads. On your own site, answer the real questions directly, add FAQ and Organization schema, and keep one canonical page per topic. Track weekly so you can see which changes moved the numbers. This page describes the score exactly as the code computes it: which engines are asked, how many times, what counts as a mention, which questions are left out, how one answer becomes a number, how 25 answers become one score, what the ± means, when no score is shown, and what has changed and when. Scoring version 10 in force since 27 October 2026. When the formula changes, the version number changes, every stored score keeps the version it was computed under, and every chart marks the step. The past is never quietly rescored. - Engines and weights - Why your own chat may answer differently - Sampling policy - Which answers count - Advice-only questions - What counts as a mention - Scoring one answer - From answers to a score - Worked example - The other numbers - The ± range - Which window each card uses - When no score is shown - What is not measured - Version history The AI visibility score is a 0 to 100 index of how your brand appears in AI answers to the questions you track. It is not a percentage of anything. A 0 means no answer in your latest check named you or listed your own site as a source. A 100 would mean every engine named you first, cited your site as a source and described you well, on every question. The AEO score (buying questions) and the GEO score (broader topic phrases) share every step below; only what is asked differs. ## Engines and weights Every tracked question is sent, word for word and with no template around it, to each engine on your plan. Every engine is called through its provider's API with live web search on, so the answer is built from pages the engine retrieved that day and not only from what the model memorised in training. Each call is a fresh session: no chat history, no memory and no signed-in account. The engine that answered, the exact provider model, whether the answer was search-grounded and whether it hit the token cap are stored with every answer. Engine | Provider and model | Weight | Availability ChatGPT | OpenAI gpt-5-search-api with web search | 1.3 | every plan Gemini | Google gemini-3.8-flash with Google Search grounding | 1.1 | every plan Claude | Anthropic claude-sonnet-5 with web search | 0.9 | every plan Perplexity | sonar-pro | 0.9 | every plan Grok | xAI grok-4.20 with web search | 0.7 | every plan The model in the table is the first choice for each engine. When a provider cannot serve it (an outage, a rate limit, a retired model name), a fallback model from the same provider answers in its place: for example gemini-pro-latest for Gemini, claude-sonnet-4-6 for Claude, sonar for Perplexity, grok-4.5 for Grok, and OpenAI's gpt-5 with its web search tool for ChatGPT. An answer never comes from a different provider. The model that answered is stored with each answer, so a fallback answer can be told apart. Google AI Mode is switched off by default since 17 October 2026 (version 8): it is not asked, and the answers it gave before stay stored and readable but leave the score, as any switched-off engine's do. The weights stand in for each engine's share of the people who ask AI assistants questions, so a mention where most people are looking counts for more. They are judgement calls, not calibrated against measured usage: nobody publishes reliable per-engine audience figures, so the ordering (ChatGPT first, Grok last) is our reading of the market and the gaps between the numbers are round. They are the code defaults; a change is annotated on the trend chart and followed by a rescore of the stored answers. An engine that is not on your plan, or that is switched off, is not in your score at all: it is neither counted nor treated as missing. ## Why your own chat may answer differently A check is not a copy of your own chat window, and the two can disagree. This is how a check is run: - Through the API, in a fresh session. No chat history, no memory, no custom instructions and no signed-in account. - With web search on. The engine searches the live web for every question. - With a country hint on some engines. When your account has a country set, ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity are told that country for their web search. Gemini and Grok take no location in the APIs used here. - Once per engine per check. One answer is stored, with its date, model and sources. Your own chat is different in ways a check cannot reproduce. The app you use may remember earlier conversations, knows the account you are signed in to, sees your location, may or may not search the web for a given question, and can run a different model from the API. Small changes in wording change the answer. And the same question asked twice in a row can name different brands, because the engines do not answer the same way every time. To compare fairly, open a new chat while signed out (or use a temporary chat), type the question exactly as it is tracked, make sure web search is on, and ask more than once. Then open the stored answer in AEOTrack: it shows the full text the engine returned, with the date and the model. If the two still disagree, the stored answer is the record of what was returned on that date, and a manual check gives you a new one. ## Sampling policy: one answer per engine per check It is one live answer per engine per question, with web search on. Each check asks each engine once, at temperature 0.2 (the engines that reject a temperature setting are asked at their default), and the answer is stored whole. Nothing is asked several times and averaged. A scheduled check runs weekly by default; paid plans also check a limited number of pinned questions daily, and the 7-day trial checks every question and topic it tracks daily while you use it. One manual re-check of a question within 24 hours of its last check is free; every other manual check comes out of the plan's monthly allowance of on-demand re-checks. We used to take three samples per engine per check and we stopped, for a measured reason. Asked the same question three times in the same second at temperature 0.2, ChatGPT returned three byte-identical answers (same hash, same token count), and Gemini's three differed in wording but scored the same. Same-second resampling of a near-deterministic model measures nothing; it tripled the cost and the wall-clock time of every check for no extra signal, and it made the ± band dishonest, because three copies of one answer were being counted as three observations. Dropping to one sample left the score unchanged and widened the range to what the real sample size supports. The variation that matters to you happens over days, not seconds: the engines re-search the live web and rank a different list next week. That is what the weekly trend measures, and it is why a single check is a reading and the trend is the measurement. The [post on why scores change](https://www.aeotrack.io/blog/why-your-ai-visibility-score-keeps-changing) covers how much of that variation is normal, and [our study of 8,758 stored answers](https://www.aeotrack.io/research/ai-answers-week-to-week) measures it: where an engine had named a business for a question, the next week’s answer gave the opposite verdict about 1 time in 3, about as often as an answer asked again minutes later. ## Which answers count An answer counts only if the engine returned text and did not cut it off at the token cap. Errored calls (a provider outage, a rate limit) and cut-off answers are excluded whether or not they named you. Until version 5, a cut-off answer that named you was kept and a cut-off answer that did not was dropped, which favoured the engines that cut off most; that is fixed. Since version 8, when an engine's newest check of a question failed, the score uses that engine's last usable answer to the question from the last 90 days instead of dropping the engine, so a provider outage does not read as a fall; a failed answer itself never counts as a 0. Cut-off answers are reported as inconclusive in the engine coverage strip, so you can see how much of an engine's output the score could not use. Below three usable answers no score is shown at all: "not enough data yet" is more honest than a number whose range spans half the scale. ## Advice-only questions Some questions never get a brand in the answer from any engine. "How do I write a privacy policy?" gets a how-to, not a shortlist, and no business is named, yours or anyone's. Until version 6 those answers scored 0 and pulled the headline number down as if you had lost a recommendation you were never in the running for. Since version 6 (27 September 2026) a question whose newest check names no business on any engine is advice-only: it is left out of the headline score, the mention rate and the range, and the count of such questions is shown next to the score so the exclusion is visible. The answers are still stored and readable, and the question comes back into the score the moment any engine names any business for it. A question where the engines name competitors and not you is not advice-only; it is a real 0, and it stays in. Onboarding flags likely advice-only questions before the first check and offers a naming question in their place, because a question nobody wins tells you nothing about who is winning. After two or more checks the app also flags a question whose answers cannot name a business like yours, and offers a buyer question in its place: see [A question that doesn't fit](https://help.aeotrack.io/articles/a-question-that-doesnt-fit). ## What counts as a mention An answer names you when one of your brand terms appears as a whole word or whole phrase in its text. The terms are the label of your registrable domain (example for example.com and for shop.example.com; a site on a shared host such as acme.github.io or acme.myshopify.com is acme, never the host's name, since version 7), the brand name you set, and every alias you add. Formatting is stripped and accents are folded first, so **ID**fy, Id-fy and Alvéole match as a reader would read them. - Plain words need to be written as a name. A brand that is also an ordinary word (Profound, Notion, Scale) only counts when the answer capitalises it somewhere or writes it in domain form (profound.com). "A profound impact" is not a mention of Profound. - Scripts without capitals are self-evidently names. A brand written in Devanagari, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic or Thai is matched as a name without a capital-letter test, since none exists (from 27 September 2026; before that these brands could not be matched at all). - Names written apart are found. Since version 7 (12 October 2026) a brand term that runs a name's words together, as a domain does (xclusiveinteriors), matches where the answer writes the name apart ("Xclusive Interiors"), "&" and "and" are one spelling ("Marks & Spencer", "Marks and Spencer"), a one-word name may carry "&" ("AT&T"), and a capital inside a word is evidence of a name ("iLook"). Since version 9 the same goes for your domain label without a get- or try- prefix or an -app or -hq suffix, and in the singular or the plural ("Think Dirty" for thinkdirtyapp.com, "Keystone Design" for keystone-designs.com), for the opening words of a bold or list entry, and for names of up to five words; never for a single ordinary word ("Measure" for getmeasure.io is the verb). - Your site’s own names count. Since version 9 the names your homepage gives itself (its structured data, its site name and its title, when they fit your domain) are added to your aliases, where you can see, edit or remove them; a name you remove is never added back. The name you [confirm for your business](https://help.aeotrack.io/articles/confirm-your-business) when you set it up is added the same way. - Close is not enough when the answer writes it as a word. Since version 7 a word that is only close to your brand, and that the same answer also writes in lower case, is vocabulary rather than a garbled name: "trade" is not a mention of Tradex. - One-letter garbles are tolerated for longer names. A single-word term of six or more characters also matches at one edit ("Idfy" written "Idfi"), never onto a common English word. - Aliases are the sanctioned way to catch other spellings. If engines write "AEO Track" for "aeotrack", add the alias; stored answers are re-read against it immediately. When the answers write a name for you that does not count yet, for example one they link to your site, the app asks ["Is this you?"](https://help.aeotrack.io/articles/brand-names-and-is-this-you) and adds it only if you say yes. - A link alone is not a mention. Since version 6 an answer that contains only your URL (as a source footnote, a citation marker or a bare link) without writing your name in the text does not count as naming you. Since version 9 that includes a link whose visible text is your address; your address written in the prose itself (" acme.co.uk is the usual pick") still counts, whatever its suffix. The link still counts towards the citation part of the per-answer score and the citation rate, and since version 10 it does so whether or not the answer names you; a mention is the engine telling the reader who you are. A namesake with its own site is not you. Since version 9 a match does not count when the only terms that matched spell the name of another company whose site the answer cites, links or writes, and nothing in the answer ties it to your site: an answer recommending a company of the same name, with that company’s own website beside it, is about that company. A more specific alias still counts, so a business that shares a word with a better-known one should add its full name as an alias. When answers tie your name to another company’s site, the app says so and asks you to confirm your business: see [Answers about a different business with your name](https://help.aeotrack.io/articles/answers-about-a-different-business). Competitors are matched with the same rules over their name, their name without its legal suffix ("Henan Lutine Industry" for "Henan Lutine Industry Co.,Ltd"), their website label and their first word, so a rival is never found by a looser test than you are. Since version 9 a single word of theirs (the first word, or a one-word website label) counts on its own only when it is distinctive: never a place, an everyday or category word, a first name, a word of your own brand, questions or topics, or a word two of your competitors share. A place, a directory or an everyday word is not a competitor: see [Competitors that aren't competitors](https://help.aeotrack.io/articles/competitors-that-arent-competitors). ## Scoring one answer Each usable answer gets a 0 to 100 score. Named earns a presence floor of 25 points, plus up to 75 for how you were named: how high in the answer's list, whether the engine used your own site as a source, and how it described you. Not named, but with your own site among the answer's sources, earns the citation part alone (since version 10): 75 x 0.30 = 22.5, with no presence floor, rank or tone, because there is no passage naming you to rank or rate. That stays below the 25 any named answer earns, so being named always counts for more than being only read. Neither named nor cited is 0. score = F + (100 - F) x (0.45 x prominence + 0.30 x citation + 0.25 x sentiment) if named score = (100 - F) x 0.30 = 22.5 if not named, and one of the answer's sources is on your own domain score = 0 otherwise F = 25 (presence floor) prominence = max(0.5, 1 / log2(position + 1)) in the list that names you (#1 = 1.00, #2 = 0.63, #3 and below = 0.50); 0.5 when you are named outside a ranked list citation = 1.0 if one of the answer's sources is on your own domain, 0.5 if your bare domain appears in the prose, else 0 sentiment = (s + 100) / 200, where s is -100 to 100, rated by a model on the passage that names you; unrated = 0.5 Rank is read from the list in the answer that names you: bullets, numbered items, bold or heading items, table rows and, since version 6, lists written as prose ("the main options are Acme, Globex and Initech" ranks Acme first, Globex second, Initech third). An answer that names you with no list of any kind gives the unranked 0.5. Since version 8 a place in a list is never worth less than that: before it, #5 of a list scored 47.4 against 51.25 for a passing mention, so moving up into a list could lower the score. Sentiment is a model's judgement of tone, not a count, and the app says so wherever it shows it. ## From answers to a score - Per question: the engine-weighted mean of the per-answer scores from the newest check of that question, over the engines that gave a usable answer. Only the newest usable answer per question and engine is used; when an engine's newest check failed, its last usable answer from the last 90 days stands in (version 8). - Advice-only questions out: a question whose newest check names no business on any engine is set aside and counted beside the score (see above). - Branded questions apart: since version 9 a question that contains your brand name, or a near-spelling of it, is left out of the headline score and scored on its own as the branded score, shown beside it. A buyer who already types your name tells you little about whether AI recommends you. If every scored question is branded, they all count, and the app says the headline is branded-only. - Per website: a recency-weighted mean of the remaining question scores. A question's weight halves every 30 days from its newest usable answer and reaches zero at 90 days, so the score is your visibility lately rather than a mixture of vintages. - Gate: fewer than three usable answers and the score is withheld. The per-question step is what the Visibility Tracker's Score column and the question drawer's ring show, and the drawer's "How this score was built" panel lists every engine's line of it. The per-website step is the number on the Dashboard. ## Worked example: 25 answers, two mentions, a score of 5 Acme tracks 5 questions on 5 engines: 25 answers, one per engine per question. Two answers name Acme, both as a bare name-drop (not in a ranked list, no citation of acme.com, tone unrated). Every other answer names other brands, so none of the five questions is advice-only and all five stay in the score. - Each of the two mentions scores 25 + 75 x (0.45 x 0.5 + 0.30 x 0 + 0.25 x 0.5) = 25 + 75 x 0.35 = 51.25. The other 23 answers neither name Acme nor list acme.com as a source, so they score 0. - Question A was named by ChatGPT (weight 1.3). Its question score is (1.3 x 51.25) / (1.3 + 1.1 + 0.9 + 0.9 + 0.7) = 66.6 / 4.9 = 13.6. - Question B was named by Perplexity (weight 0.9): (0.9 x 51.25) / 4.9 = 9.4. - Questions C, D and E score 0. - All five were checked this week, so their recency weights are equal: (13.6 + 9.4 + 0 + 0 + 0) / 5 = 4.6, shown as 5 / 100. Named in 2 of 25 answers: mention rate 8%. The same 25 answers with Acme cited as a source and ranked #1 in those two answers would score 25 + 75 x (0.45 x 1.0 + 0.30 x 1.0 + 0.25 x 0.5) = 91.25 each, and the website score would be about 8. Getting named on a third question is worth more than perfecting the two you have: that is why the improvement plan puts "get onto the sources" above every other task. ## The other numbers beside the score - Mention rate: usable answers that named you, divided by all usable answers, from the same newest checks the score reads. - Citation rate: answers with one of your own URLs among their sources, divided by all usable answers. Since version 10 an answer counts whether or not it names you; until then only answers that named you were counted. - Where any brand is named: answers that named you, divided by answers that named you or any competitor you track. Blank, not 0, when no answer named any tracked brand. It is a share of names, so an answer that only lists your site as a source does not count in it. - Branded score: the same composite over the questions that contain your brand name or a near-spelling of it, marked with a badge. Since version 9 they are shown beside the headline and never in it; until then they stayed in the headline and a separate non-branded score left them out, so that non-branded score is now the headline itself. - Demand-weighted score: the same composite with each question's weight multiplied by 1 to 3 on a log curve of related Search Console demand. A second number, never the headline in disguise. - Share of voice: your share of mentions among the brands you track, question-weighted, over every check in the last 30 days. Tracking more competitors pushes it down without your visibility changing. ## The ± range: what to expect between two checks Every score carries a ± range. Read it as the range to expect between two checks: a move that stays inside it is normal variation, not a change in your visibility, and a real move is one outside the range. Statistically it is a 95% interval on the score itself, not on any one of its ingredients; three estimates are computed and the widest is shown: - A question-level bootstrap. The tracked questions are resampled with replacement 2,000 times with their engine answers intact, and the score recomputed each time. This measures how much the number depends on which questions happen to be in the set. - A within-answer bootstrap. The answers inside each question and engine cell are resampled. With one answer per cell, which is every check since the sampling policy above, this estimate is zero wide; it is kept for accounts with older multi-sample checks. - A floor from the mention rate. A Wilson interval on how often you were named, rescaled onto the score. At zero mentions the floor uses what a first mention would earn, so a 0 is never shown as "0 ±0". The range is re-centred on the score and clamped to 0 to 100. The bootstrap has a fixed seed, so the same stored answers always produce the same range. The trend chart and the "within noise" label apply the same rule over time. Score-change alerts fire only when a move is at least your threshold and the two checks' ranges no longer overlap, never across a check where engines were dark, and no score-drop alert is sent in the first 48 hours after an account’s first answer. The [week-to-week study](https://www.aeotrack.io/research/ai-answers-week-to-week) shows why: one answer flips often by chance. ## Which window each card uses Different cards answer different questions, so they read different windows. Each card says which, in the same words: Where | Rows | Window AI visibility score, mention rate, "Your result at a glance" | latest check per question and engine | recency-weighted, nothing older than 90 days Engine by engine card | all checks | last 90 days Share of voice, competitors page, share-of-voice rank | all checks | last 30 days Question drawer (share of voice, citations, responses) | all checks | 30 days by default, selectable "Named by AI" badge | all checks | last 30 days Trend chart | one point per check | last 90 days; change measured only between points with the same scoring version, a full engine panel and the same question set ## When no score is shown A blank is a state, not a 0, and the app names which one. The states are: - Not enough data yet. Fewer than three usable answers in the window. The first check of a new website usually clears this within the hour; a website whose engines all errored does not. - Advice-only. Every question in the set is advice-only (no engine named any business for any of them), so nothing is left to score. The count is shown; replace a question with one buyers ask by name and a score appears at the next check. - Stale. No usable answer in the last 30 days. The last score stays readable, marked as of its date, and the trend chart draws no line across the gap. A check that runs, or a re-check, clears it. - Not measured. An engine that is not on your plan or is switched off, and a question that is paused or retired, show as "not measured" rather than as 0. They are absent from the score, the mention rate and the range, and the engine coverage strip says so; a 0 is reserved for an engine that answered and did not name you. - Inconclusive. An engine whose answer errored or was cut off at the token cap for a question. Also absent from the score (see "Which answers count"); shown so you can see how much of an engine's output the score could not use. Each state carries its own label wherever a score would appear, and none of them is averaged into anything. ## What is not measured - Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. - Persona, device, sign-in or conversation memory: every call is an API call with no history. The only location signal is the country set on your account, sent to ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity. See why your own chat may answer differently. - Question volume, in the headline score. Only the demand-weighted score weights questions, and only from Search Console. - The free audit's 0 to 100 number is a site hygiene check of the homepage, not this score. Its AI check is one question on two engines, shown with both full answers. ## Version history Version | Date | What changed 1 | before August 2026 | mentioned / total, unweighted, no window 2 | August 2026 | the composite above; a Wilson interval on the mention rate 3 | August 2026 | same score; the range became a bootstrap on the composite itself 4 | 6 September 2026 | inputs: plain-word brands need capital or domain-form evidence, bold and numbered rankings are read, sentiment rated per engine; every stored answer re-flagged and every website rescored once 5 | 22 September 2026 | inputs: cut-off answers excluded whether or not they named you, sentiment rated on the passage that names you and blank when unrated, up to 50 sources stored per answer; range: question-level bootstrap added, non-zero floor at a score of 0 6 | 27 September 2026 | aggregation: questions where no engine names any business (advice-only) are left out of the headline score, the mention rate and the range, with the count shown beside the score; inputs: an answer that carries only your URL, with no name in the text, no longer counts as a mention; rank is read from lists written as prose as well as from bullets, numbers and tables; every stored answer re-read and every website rescored once 7 | 12 October 2026 | inputs: brand names written as separate words are found ("Xclusive Interiors" for xclusiveinteriors), "&" and "and" are one spelling, a capital inside a word marks a name, a word only close to the brand that the answer also writes in lower case is not a mention, and a site on a shared host is tracked under its own label; every stored answer re-read and every website rescored once, with no emails or alerts 8 | 17 October 2026 | per-answer: a ranked mention is never worth less than an unranked one (prominence floored at 0.5); inputs: an engine whose newest check failed uses its last usable answer from the last 90 days instead of dropping out; Google AI Mode switched off by default, its stored answers kept; every stored answer re-read and every website rescored once, with no emails or alerts 9 | October 2026 | aggregation: questions that contain your brand name or a near-spelling of it leave the headline score and are scored beside it as the branded score (all of them count when nothing else is tracked); inputs: a name that the answer ties only to another company’s own site is not a mention, a link whose text is your address is not a mention while your address in the prose counts on any suffix, your domain label’s other spellings and the opening words of a list entry are read, your homepage’s own names become aliases, and a competitor’s single word counts on its own only when it is distinctive; no score-drop alert in an account’s first 48 hours; every stored answer re-read and every website rescored once, with no emails or alerts 10 | 27 October 2026 | per-answer: an answer that lists your own site among its sources earns the citation part (22.5) even when it does not name you, below the 25 floor of any named answer; side numbers: the citation rate counts every answer that lists your site, named or not, while the share where any brand is named still counts names only; every website rescored once, with no emails or alerts Two changes on the same day as version 6 did not move the version because they change matching, not the formula: brand terms come from the registrable domain rather than the first label of a subdomain, and names in scripts without capitals are matched (both 27 September 2026, with stored answers re-read). Scheduled checks never count against the pool. ## Why weekly Every question is asked again weekly, because re-asking the same day measures noise: an AI answer can name different brands from one ask to the next, so a daily number mostly moves on its own. A week gives the sites the engines read time to change. Your pinned questions are checked daily as well, and you can re-run any question after you change something. [How the score is calculated](https://www.aeotrack.io/methodology) ## Your week-by-week plan Every paid plan comes with a week-by-week plan (Weekly plan in the app). It lays your action plan out over 4 to 6 weeks, longer when your score starts lower, built from your own questions, the sites the engines read and the competitors they name: up to three tasks a week, each with the site or page it targets. It shows an estimated score band for what typically happens if the tasks are done (an estimate, not a guarantee), then plots your real weekly score against it so you can see the movement. On the 7-day free trial you see week one in full and the weeks after it in outline. Call it three minutes an answer. Here is what each plan does on its own. Starter · $39/mo 125 answers a week 25 questions across 5 engines, plus daily reads on your 3 pinned questions. About 6 hours of manual checking a week — and it tells you the one fix that matters, with the sources the engines read. Pro · $99/mo 375 answers a week 75 questions across 5 engines, over 3 websites, plus daily reads on your 10 pinned questions. More than 18 hours of manual checking a week, with Slack alerts when a change clears the noise. Agency · $249/mo 1,250 answers a week 250 questions across 5 engines over 10 client sites, plus daily on 25 pinned. Roughly 62 hours a week of reading — more than one analyst's full week — delivered as white-label reports your clients can open themselves. There's a 7-day free trial on the Starter plan's limits, checked daily while you use it, with no credit card required. There isn't a permanent free tier. Running real checks means real queries against paid AI APIs, one live answer per engine per question, with web search on. A free tier would mean either fake results or no results, and neither is worth having. The [free audit](https://www.aeotrack.io/audit) is the no-account way to see a real answer first. What happens when the trial ends? The trial lasts 7 days [from when you add your website](https://help.aeotrack.io/articles/when-your-trial-starts), not from sign-up. It runs on the Starter plan’s limits for all 7 days: 1 website, 25 questions, 10 topics, 10 competitors and 15 on-demand re-checks, with every question and topic you track checked daily while you use it. Agency sign-ups get the same trial. When it ends, nothing is deleted: your scores, history and competitors stay visible and checks pause. At the end of the trial, choose a paid plan to keep tracking; nothing is charged automatically. [Each website gets one free trial](https://help.aeotrack.io/articles/one-account-per-website), so a website that has already had one gets no second trial: choose a plan, or, when another workspace already tracks the website, use Request access to ask its owner to invite you. Do I need a credit card to start? No. You get 7 days without entering any payment details, and nothing is charged automatically when the trial ends. At the end of the trial, choose a paid plan to keep tracking. How do add-ons and overage bill? Add-ons are flat monthly amounts added to your subscription: an extra website is $15/mo, 10 more questions are $10/mo, 25 more re-checks are $5/mo and an extra seat on Agency is $15/mo. They prorate for the current period like an upgrade and can be removed at any renewal. If you use more on-demand re-checks than your pool plus any packs: Monthly plans: $0.50 per extra re-check, billed at the end of the period, no hard wall. Annual plans: 10 extra re-checks a month included, then upgrade or wait for the next month. Add-ons bill monthly, so on an annual plan we arrange them for you: write to support@aeotrack.io. How does the referral program work? Give a month, get a month. Share your referral link; when the company you referred completes its first paid month, you both receive one free month. A month you earn while you are on the free trial is kept and comes off your first paid month. One reward per referred company, trial-only referrals earn nothing, and codes may not be posted on coupon sites. [Full terms](https://www.aeotrack.io/referral). What is white-label reporting? On the Agency plan the PDF reports carry your agency's name, logo and colour instead of AEOTrack's, and can be scheduled to go to each client weekly or monthly. Client share links give each client a read-only view of their own dashboard, with unlimited free client-viewer seats. [How share links and white-label reports work](https://help.aeotrack.io/articles/share-links-and-white-label-reports). Can I change plans later? Yes, at any time from the billing page. Upgrades apply immediately and you pay only the prorated difference for the rest of the current billing period — that is the only time proration applies. Downgrades take effect at your next renewal, so you keep everything you have paid for until then. You can cancel whenever you like: your plan stays active until the end of the current billing period. There is a 30-day money-back guarantee on your first monthly payment, and other payments for a billing period already started are not refunded in part. Is there a money-back guarantee? Yes, a 30-day money-back guarantee on your first monthly payment: if AEOTrack is not worth it to you, write to support@aeotrack.io within 30 days of that payment and we refund it in full, for any reason. The refund goes back to the card you paid with within 5 business days of your request, and the plan is cancelled. Annual plans are not covered for accounts created from 24 October 2026. A charge made in error, such as a duplicate or a renewal after you cancelled, is always refunded in full. Other payments for a billing period that has already started are not refunded in part. The full terms are in [section 9 of the Terms of Service](https://www.aeotrack.io/terms#payment-terms). How much do I save on annual billing? Two months free: you pay for 10 months and get 12. Starter is $390 a year ($33/mo billed annually), Pro $990 a year ($83/mo) and Agency $2,490 a year ($208/mo). Enterprise is billed annually from $799/mo. Which AI engines do you check? ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok, on every plan and on the trial. Each check calls the AI tool through its API with live web search on, in a fresh session with no chat history, memory or sign-in. Your own chat is personalised and varies from ask to ask, so it can answer differently: [why your own chat may answer differently](https://www.aeotrack.io/methodology#own-chat). Why is my score 0 when my audit grade was B? They measure different things: the audit grade is a site hygiene checklist for your homepage (how easy it is for AI engines to read), and the score is visibility (whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok actually named you in their answers to the questions you track). A well-built page can still be one no engine names: the grade describes the page, and the score describes the answers. All AEO Basics Crawlers & Measurement AI Visibility & Citations Getting Started AI Visibility Tracking Scores & Audit Content & Optimization Tools Billing & Plans Privacy & Security ## AI Visibility & Citations ### How do I get more citations from ChatGPT and Perplexity? Earn third-party sources. AI engines answer by synthesising several pages at once — in our own measurements an engine that cited a brand's site consulted 7.7 other sources alongside it, so the brand's own page was about 11% of the evidence. Editing your own site alone rarely moves a citation rate. What moves it is appearing in the roundups, comparison posts, community threads and review pages the engines already read for your category. Find those with a source gap analysis: list the domains that get cited when a competitor is recommended and have never cited you, then work down that list. ### How do I know if AI assistants trust my content? Look at whether engines cite you as a source, not just whether they mention you. A mention can come from training data; a citation means the engine retrieved your page and treated it as checkable. The strongest trust signals are third-party corroboration (other sites saying the same thing about you), specific verifiable facts rather than claims, visible author and organization identity, structured data that matches the visible page, and content that is kept current. A page that is retrieved often but never cited usually lacks a concrete, quotable fact. ### How can I monitor when AI search cites my website? Citation tracking records every time an AI engine names your URL as a source, which engine did it, and for which question. It is a higher bar than a mention — the engine has to treat your page as a reference, not just recall your brand — so most sites see zero at first. AEOTrack logs each citation with the question that produced it, so you can see which pages earn references and which questions never surface you at all. ## Crawlers & Measurement ### Why can't a JavaScript tracking snippet count AI crawlers? Because AI crawlers don't run JavaScript. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and the rest request your HTML and leave, so a snippet that fires on page load never executes for them. A JavaScript-only bot counter therefore reports a small and unrepresentative fraction of real crawler traffic, and gives no signal that it is a fraction — the visits it misses look exactly like visits that never happened. Server logs have no such blind spot: every request appears whether or not anything ran client-side. ### How do I track AI crawlers accurately? Read your CDN or edge access logs rather than relying on a browser snippet. AEOTrack ingests logs pushed from a Vercel Log Drain or a Cloudflare Logpush job, identifies known AI crawler user-agents, and records the path and the status code each one received. The status code matters: a 403 to GPTBot or a 404 to a crawler is a finding on its own, and it is structurally invisible to a JavaScript beacon, which by definition only runs on pages that rendered successfully. ### What is the difference between branded and non-branded AI visibility? A branded question already contains your name, so an engine mentioning you proves little about whether it would recommend you unprompted. A non-branded question is one a buyer asks before they know any brand names — and that is the only kind that measures organic discovery. The distinction matters most for brands named after their category, where the ordinary phrasing of the category contains the brand once spacing is ignored, and an engine retrieves you for spelling reasons rather than reputation. AEOTrack classifies every tracked question and, since scoring version 9, builds the headline score only from the neutral ones, with the branded questions scored beside it. ### How do enterprises monitor AEO across multiple AI platforms and brands? By tracking each brand as its own workspace with its own question set, competitors and schedule, then comparing them on the same metrics. The things that matter at multi-brand scale are per-engine breakdowns (engines disagree sharply — one may name you consistently while another never does), share of voice against a named competitor set, scheduled checks so the data is a trend rather than a snapshot, and role-based access so each team sees its own brands. AEOTrack tracks 1 website on Starter (more at $15/month each), 3 on Pro, 10 on Agency and a custom number on Enterprise. ### How do I benchmark my AI visibility against competitors? Compare share of voice on the same questions, not on separate ones. Share of voice is your mentions as a proportion of all tracked brands' mentions across the same set of AI answers, so it moves when your position genuinely changes rather than when you add more questions. Useful alongside it: average position within the answer (being named first is not the same as being named), and a per-engine breakdown, because a competitor can dominate one engine and be absent from another. ## AEO Basics ### What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of optimizing your website content so that AI-powered search engines — like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Grok — can find, understand, and cite your content in their generated answers. Unlike traditional SEO which focuses on ranking in link-based results, AEO ensures your brand appears when users ask AI assistants questions about your industry. ### What is the best AEO tracker in 2026? It depends on what you need. Judge any tracker on which engines it asks, whether it asks with live web search on, whether it separates being cited from being named, how often it checks and what each answer costs. AEOTrack asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok with live web search on, every week, from $39 a month, and is built around agencies with white-label reports. Some rivals check daily or sell to enterprises; the comparison page at aeotrack.io/compare lists them with the date each was checked. The fix steps, your other buyer questions and ongoing tracking come with the 7-day trial or a paid plan. Results in about a minute. ### What does AEO tracking software do? AEO tracking software monitors whether AI answer engines mention your brand, cite your URLs, or recommend your competitors. AEOTrack's tracking software queries ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Grok with your keywords, calculates the AI visibility score and citation counts, and provides a plan ordered by how often each issue shows up in your answers. ### How does an AEO analyzer work? An AEO analyzer crawls your webpage and evaluates how well it is optimized for AI answer engines. AEOTrack's analyzer checks content structure, FAQ coverage, schema markup (JSON-LD), readability, keyword targeting, and answer-readiness. It then produces a site hygiene score from 0-100 with a specific list of what to fix on the page. That is separate from the AI visibility score, which is read from what the engines actually answered. ## Getting Started ### What is AEOTrack? AEOTrack (aeotrack.io) is an Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) platform that tracks your brand's visibility in AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok. You add your website and the questions your customers actually ask, and we report how often you're mentioned or cited — with the range to expect between two checks — along with the specific fixes that move it. ### Is there a free plan? There's a 7-day free trial on the Starter plan's limits, checked daily while you use it, with no credit card required: 1 website, 25 tracked questions, 10 topics, 10 competitors and 15 on-demand re-checks for all 7 days. Onboarding sets up 10 questions to start; you can add up to 25. The trial lasts 7 days [from when you add your website](https://help.aeotrack.io/articles/when-your-trial-starts), not from sign-up. There's no permanent free tier — real checks mean real queries against five paid AI APIs, one answer per engine per question on every check. When the trial ends your account becomes read-only: nothing is deleted, and picking a plan resumes everything. The trial is not extended, and each website gets one trial. The free AEO Audit at aeotrack.io/audit asks for your website and work email and shows [the full evidence for one buyer question](https://www.aeotrack.io/blog/free-ai-visibility-audit-what-it-shows) in about a minute — no account needed. ### How do I get started? Sign up at aeotrack.io, add your website URL and the questions your buyers ask (we suggest them from your site), and we'll run your first visibility check automatically. Your first answers arrive about 7 minutes after you add your website (the median for new accounts). You can also run a free one-off audit at aeotrack.io/audit without creating an account. ### Do I need technical skills to use AEOTrack? No. AEOTrack is built for marketers, content creators, and business owners. Setup needs only your website address. The dashboard uses plain-language explanations and prioritized action steps. The FAQ Schema Generator produces copy-paste-ready JSON-LD markup. ## AI Visibility Tracking ### Which AI engines does AEOTrack monitor? Five on every plan: OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, Perplexity AI and xAI's Grok, on every plan and on the trial. Each check calls the AI tool through its API with live web search on, in a fresh session with no chat history, memory or sign-in. Your own chat is personalised and varies from ask to ask, so it can answer differently. [Why your own chat may answer differently](https://www.aeotrack.io/methodology#own-chat). We report mentions and citations per engine so you can see where to focus. ### How often are visibility checks run? Every paid plan runs scheduled weekly checks of everything you track automatically, so your visibility is tracked without you clicking anything. On top of that, every paid plan monitors a pinned set of questions daily: 3 on Starter, 10 on Pro, 25 on Agency, and everything on Enterprise. During the 7-day free trial, every question and topic you track is checked daily while you use it: a day's check runs when someone on your account opened AEOTrack the day before. On-demand re-checks come from a monthly pool — 15 on Starter and on the trial, 60 on Pro, 200 on Agency, 500 on Enterprise — and beyond the pool: monthly plans pay $0.50 per extra re-check, no hard wall; annual plans get 10 extra re-checks a month included, then upgrade or wait for the next month. One re-check queries every configured engine, and each question has a 24-hour cooldown so you aren't paying for noise. ### What is an AI visibility score? Your AI visibility score (0–100) measures more than whether you were mentioned. A mention earns a baseline, then adds points for how high you rank in the answer, whether the engine cites your site as a source, and how positively it describes you. Engines are combined by weight, one live answer per engine per question, and the score is shown with a range (for example 62 ±8). The range is what to expect between two checks, so a move inside it is normal variation, not a change in your visibility. ### What is citation tracking? Citation tracking monitors when AI engines explicitly link to or reference your URLs as sources in their answers. It shows which pages are most cited, on which engines, and for which queries — so you know exactly which content to double down on. ## Scores & the Free Audit ### What is the free AEO Audit? A free check of one buyer question, with the evidence. The audit at aeotrack.io/audit asks ChatGPT and Perplexity a question your buyers ask and shows the exact question and when it was asked, whether each one named you, every business each named instead, with a link to its own site when the answer gave one, each full answer, the pages they read and a link to ask the same question yourself. A separate site hygiene check grades your homepage's code and content; it is not your AI visibility score. The fixes, your other buyer questions and daily tracking come with the 7-day trial or a paid plan. About a minute; no account, and every result has a shareable page. [What the result shows, explained](https://www.aeotrack.io/blog/free-ai-visibility-audit-what-it-shows). ### How are the two scores calculated? There are two scores, and they measure different things. The AI visibility score (0–100, shown on your dashboard) is built from what the AI engines actually answered: whether you were named, where in the answer, whether your site was cited, and how positively, combined across engines and shown with the range to expect between two checks. The free audit's site hygiene score is different: it grades your own page — content structure, schema markup, readability and answer-readiness — and moves the moment you publish a fix. Improving the site hygiene score helps engines read you; only the AI visibility score tells you whether they recommend you. ### Why is my score 0 when my audit grade was B? They measure different things: the audit grade is a site hygiene checklist for your homepage (how easy it is for AI engines to read), and the score is visibility (whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok actually named you in their answers to the questions you track). A well-built page can still be one no engine names: the grade describes the page, and the score describes the answers. [How the score is calculated](https://www.aeotrack.io/methodology). ### Why does my score start at 0, and what do I do? A 0 means none of the five engines named you in their answers to the questions checked. It is common for a new or small brand: the engines name the businesses they find clear, consistent evidence for on the sites they read. What to do: 1) let AI crawlers in and put your key facts (who you serve, what you do, where, prices) in plain text on your site; 2) answer each main buyer question on its own page, in the first lines; 3) get onto the sites the engines read for those questions, such as directories, review sites and comparison lists; 4) describe your business the same way everywhere; 5) re-check weekly and give it 4 to 6 weeks. [The full guide](https://www.aeotrack.io/blog/ai-visibility-score-is-zero-what-to-do). The per-question tasks, the list of sources and tracking the movement need the 7-day trial or a paid plan. ### What is the 6-week plan? On every paid plan, the Weekly plan in the app lays your action plan out over 4 to 6 weeks: 6 when your score starts below 15, 5 when it starts below 40, otherwise 4. Each week has up to three tasks, each with the site or page it targets, built from your own questions, the sources the engines read and the competitors they name. It shows an estimated score band for what typically happens if the tasks are done (an estimate, not a guarantee), then plots your real weekly score against it so you can see the movement. The 7-day trial shows week one in full and the later weeks in outline; the free audit shows the week titles. [How the plan is built](https://www.aeotrack.io/blog/six-week-plan-to-raise-ai-visibility-score) · [Help: the weekly plan](https://help.aeotrack.io/articles/your-6-week-plan). ### How do I improve my AI visibility score? Get onto the sites AI reads when it names a rival and not you: the roundup lists, directories, review sites and threads the engines cite for your questions. AEOTrack's plan leads with those sites, ranked by evidence (how often each engine read them), not by a promised effect. On your own site, answer the questions buyers ask in plain text with specific facts the engines can quote, and keep it current. Structured data, FAQ markup and llms.txt are a short hygiene checklist, not visibility levers. ## Content & Optimization Tools ### What is the FAQ Generator? The FAQ Generator takes any URL and produces 10 AEO-optimized questions and answers based on your page content. It generates ready-to-deploy JSON-LD FAQ Page schema markup that you can add to your site's to help AI engines find and cite your answers. ### What is the Content Optimizer? The Content Optimizer analyzes your page and rewrites or suggests improvements to make it more answer-engine friendly — better structured, more concise, with clearer answers. It's included on every plan — Starter includes 50 optimizer and FAQ generations a month, Pro and above are unlimited. ### What is SERP Monitoring? SERP Monitoring tracks your organic Google ranking for a keyword next to your AI visibility for the same topic, so you can see whether classic search and AI answers move together. It reads the organic results only — it does not read Google AI Overviews. Available on Pro and higher plans. ### What is Competitor Intelligence? Competitor Intelligence lets you compare your AI visibility score against competitor domains. See which competitors are cited more often by AI engines, on which queries, and what content they have that you don't — so you can close the gap. Included on every plan: Starter and Pro track up to 10 competitors, Agency 25 and Enterprise has no limit. ## Billing & Plans ### How does billing work? Paid plans are billed monthly or annually — annual billing gives you two months free (pay for 10 months, get 12). You can cancel anytime from your Billing page; your plan remains active until the end of the billing period you have already paid for. There is a 30-day money-back guarantee on your first monthly payment, and other payments for a billing period already started are not refunded in part. All payments are processed securely by Stripe. ### Do referral rewards extend the free trial? No. The free trial is not extended. A free month you earn through the referral program while you are on the trial is kept and comes off your first paid month; one you earn after you subscribe goes on your next invoice. The referred company's first payment is what earns it, for both sides. [Referral terms](https://www.aeotrack.io/referral). ### Can I upgrade or downgrade my plan? Yes. Upgrades apply immediately from your Billing page — the new features are available right away and you pay only the prorated difference for the rest of the current billing period. Downgrades take effect at the start of your next billing period: you keep your current plan until then, and nothing is refunded or credited. ### Is there a refund policy? ### Do you offer annual pricing? Yes. Every plan has an annual option with two months free — Starter is $390 a year ($33/mo billed annually), Pro $990 a year ($83/mo) and Agency $2,490 a year ($208/mo); Enterprise is billed annually from $799/mo. Switch the toggle on the pricing page, or change it from your Billing page at any time. ## Privacy & Security ### How does AEOTrack handle my data? We store your account information, website configurations, and analysis results securely in MySQL with encryption in transit (TLS/SSL). We do not sell your personal data. Website URLs you submit are processed via AI APIs (OpenAI, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, Perplexity and xAI Grok) for analysis, consistent with their privacy policies. ### Is my payment information secure? Yes. All payments are processed by Stripe, a PCI DSS Level 1 certified provider. We never store your credit card details on our servers. ### How do I whitelist AEOTrack’s crawler? Allow the User-Agent AEOTrackBot (currently AEOTrackBot/1.0) in your firewall, CDN or robots.txt — that covers every fetch AEOTrack itself makes when it analyzes your pages. The AI engines are separate: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok read your site with their own crawlers (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User, Google-Extended and GoogleOther), and blocking those stops AI engines from reading and citing you at all. A ready-to-paste robots.txt allowing all of them is at aeotrack.io/downloads/robots-ai-bots.txt. ### How can I delete my account? You can request account deletion by emailing privacy@aeotrack.io. We'll delete your personal data within 30 days. Anonymized, aggregated analytics may be retained for product improvement. ### What is the difference between being cited and being mentioned in an AI answer? Cited means the engine retrieved one of your URLs while composing the answer. Mentioned means your brand name appears in the text a person actually reads. They are separate events and they fail for opposite reasons. Across 446 tracked answers for one domain, 15% cited the site but only 9% named it, and on one engine 22 answers cited the site without naming it once. AEOTrack reports the two numbers separately per question and per engine, because a single blended “visibility” figure hides the gap between them. ### Why do AI engines cite my site but still recommend a competitor? Because your page is only part of the evidence. When an engine cited one tracked domain it consulted an average of 7.7 other sources alongside it, so that site was roughly an eighth of the material behind the answer — and if the other sources name a competitor, the engine takes the facts from you and the recommendation from them. This is a corroboration problem, not a crawling one: more schema markup or another rewrite will not change it. The fix is to earn factual mentions on the domains the engine already retrieves for your questions. ## Measuring AEO Across AI Assistants ### How do I track AEO mentions in ChatGPT and Gemini? Ask each engine the questions your buyers actually ask, on a schedule, and record two separate things: whether your brand is named in the answer, and whether your URL is cited as a source. They are not the same signal — a mention can come from training data, while a citation means the engine retrieved your page and treated it as checkable. Doing this by hand fails for a specific reason: AI answers are non-deterministic, so a single check is an anecdote, not a rate. You need the same question asked repeatedly before the number means anything. AEOTrack asks your questions on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok, stores every answer, and reports mention rate and citation rate per question per engine. ### How do I measure AEO performance in AI search results? With two rates, measured per question and per engine: how often the engine names your brand (mention rate) and how often it cites your site as a source (citation rate). Track both, because they move independently — it is common to sit near 30% mentions and under 5% citations, which means the engines know who you are but do not treat your pages as evidence. Report the numbers with a range rather than as a single figure, since answers change between checks and one check is a reading, not a trend. A useful measurement also records which other domains were cited alongside you, because that list is the work: those are the sources the engine already trusts for your category. ### How do enterprises handle AEO monitoring across AI platforms? The same measurement, with more structure. At scale it becomes one tracked question set per brand or product line, run on a schedule across every engine that matters, with results split by engine rather than averaged — engines disagree far more than most teams expect, and a blended score hides that. Add alerting that fires only when a score moves outside its noise band, competitor share-of-voice on the same questions, and citation-source tracking so you can see which third-party domains the engines read for your category. The parts that scale badly are all manual: a person pasting questions into five chat windows cannot produce a rate, cannot cover several brands, and cannot separate a real drop from run-to-run variance. ### What are the alternatives to manual AEO tracking methods? Manual tracking means opening ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok, pasting a question into each, and noting whether you were mentioned. It has three failure modes, not one: AI answers are non-deterministic, so a single run is an anecdote rather than a rate; personalisation and chat history skew what you see against what a stranger sees; and the effort grows with questions multiplied by engines multiplied by weeks, so it stops the first time you are busy. The alternatives fall into three groups. Scheduled automated checks ask the same questions on a schedule and report a rate with a range. Log-based crawler tracking tells you which AI crawlers actually fetched your pages, but not what any engine said about you. Brand-monitoring tools watch the open web rather than the engines, which is useful but does not answer whether an assistant recommends you. AEOTrack is the first kind. ### What is the best AEO tracking software for AI assistants? It depends on what you need to prove, and an honest answer names more than one tool. If the question is whether assistants recommend you and cite you, judge a tool on: which assistants it covers (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok), whether it reports mention rate and citation rate separately, whether it breaks results down per engine instead of blending them, whether it shows a range with each score so you can tell a real change from normal variation, and whether it records the other sources cited alongside you. The category includes AEOTrack, Profound, Peec AI, Otterly, Semrush's AI toolkit and BrightEdge; they differ mainly in engine coverage, whether citations are measured at all, and price. AEOTrack's own difference is that it measures AEO and GEO separately and reports intervals rather than one number. ### What are the best AEO platforms for AI content optimization? Measurement and optimization are different jobs, and most tools do one of them well. A platform aimed at AI content optimization should do three things: show you which questions you are invisible for, show you what the engines cited instead of you, and give you a change you can actually make — schema that matches your visible copy, an answer-first rewrite, an FAQ block that mirrors questions people really ask. Be sceptical of anything that promises to optimize for AI without showing the measurement underneath, because the only proof an optimization worked is the mention or citation rate moving afterwards. Tools in this space include AEOTrack, Profound, Peec AI and Otterly; Semrush and BrightEdge come at it from traditional SEO. ## Still have questions? Our team is happy to help. About us # About AEOTrack AEOTrack shows whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok name your business when your customers ask, who they name instead, the answer behind every number, and one fix a week. - 5 AI engines on every plan - Weekly checks, pinned questions daily - No simulations - Method public [Run the free audit](https://www.aeotrack.io/audit) [Start free trial](https://www.aeotrack.io/signup) The product ## What AEOTrack does Add your website and AEOTrack suggests the questions your buyers ask. It puts each one to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Grok with live web search on, and shows who each answer named: you, a competitor or nobody. - ### The answer behind every number Every number opens the answer it came from: the question, the date, the engine, the answer text and the pages it cited, so you can check it yourself. Every score comes with the range to expect between two checks, so you can tell a real move from noise. - ### One fix a week From those answers and the sites the engines read, you get one fix a week: usually getting onto a page that recommends your rivals and not you. Our story ## Why it exists The first audits we ran came back the same way for almost every site: a B for site hygiene and a zero for being named. The hygiene grade said the page was fine. The zero said no engine recommended the business when a buyer asked. No tool we tried showed the answer behind the number. There was no way to read what the engines had said, see who they had named instead, or tell which page that recommendation came from. AEOTrack is that missing view: the answer, the rival, the source, and one fix a week. Method ## How a check works - AEOTrack asks each engine every tracked question once a week on a paid plan, your pinned questions daily, and every question daily during the 7-day trial while you use it. - Each engine is asked through its API, in a fresh session with live web search on and no chat history or sign-in. Every answer is stored with its date, the model that answered and the sources it read. - Weekly, because re-asking the same day measures noise: an AI answer can name different brands from one ask to the next. The [week-to-week study](https://www.aeotrack.io/research/ai-answers-week-to-week) shows how much the answers move, and the [methodology page](https://www.aeotrack.io/methodology) shows how a check is run and scored. AEOTrack does not track Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode or Microsoft Copilot. Principles ## What we refuse to do - ### No simulated answers. Every number comes from a real answer from a real engine, with its live web search on. - ### No invented testimonials. There are no customer quotes on this site until a real customer agrees to be named. - ### One answer per engine per question per check, and we show it. We used to take three samples and stopped when the data showed that same-second resampling measures nothing. - ### The method is public. Engines, weights, what counts as a mention and what does not count at all are on the [methodology page](https://www.aeotrack.io/methodology). Customers ## Who it is for - ### Businesses checking their own visibility. You want to know whether AI recommends you when a buyer asks, who it recommends instead, and what to fix first. Starter is $39 a month for one website; Pro is $99 a month for three websites. - ### Agencies reporting on clients. The Agency plan is $249 a month for 10 client websites, with white-label PDF reports on a schedule, read-only client share links and free client-viewer seats. [AEOTrack for agencies](https://www.aeotrack.io/for-agencies). Enterprise starts at $799 a month, billed annually; every plan and limit is on the [pricing page](https://www.aeotrack.io/pricing). The 7-day free trial runs on the Starter plan's limits and needs no card, and the 7 days start when you add your website. Privacy ## Your data ### What data does AEOTrack hold about my business?
