What is AI Search Optimization?
AI Search Optimization is the discipline of ensuring your brand is consistently cited in AI-generated answers. It encompasses two complementary strategies:
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) — Getting cited for specific questions ("What is the best AEO tracking tool?")
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — Being included in AI-generated topic overviews and category-level synthesis
AI search engines now handle billions of queries monthly. Unlike traditional search (which shows ranked link lists), AI engines generate direct answers citing a small number of authoritative sources. If your brand isn't cited, you're invisible to a growing, high-intent audience.
Optimize for All 5 Major AI Engines
ChatGPT
Retrieves via Bing index. Allow GPTBot in robots.txt. Optimize for direct-answer content structure and get mentioned on the pages ChatGPT reads for your questions; FAQ schema is hygiene with no measurable citation effect.
Google Gemini
Uses Google's own index. Allow Google-Extended. Traditional SEO ranking strongly predicts AI Overview inclusion.
Perplexity
Maintains own real-time index. Allow PerplexityBot. Content freshness is the most differentiating ranking signal.
Claude
Anthropic's own index. Allow ClaudeBot and anthropic-ai. Favors factually precise, comprehensive, nuanced content.
Grok
xAI's assistant, with deep integration into X (Twitter) and live web search. Keep your site fully crawlable and well-indexed by Bing and Google, which Grok's web search draws from.
Step 1: Achieve Citation Eligibility
Citation eligibility is binary — either AI engines can access your content or they can't. Add these to your robots.txt:
User-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /
User-agent: Google-Extended
Allow: /
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
User-agent: ClaudeBot
Allow: /
User-agent: anthropic-ai
Allow: /
If your robots.txt blocks these crawlers today, this takes five minutes and lets the engines fetch your pages. If it already allows them, there is nothing to gain here. Either way it is hygiene, not a visibility lever.
Step 2: Add FAQ Schema Where You Have a Visible FAQ
FAQ Schema (FAQPage JSON-LD) is hygiene worth doing once: it describes a visible FAQ in a form machines read easily. It is not a visibility lever: controlled tests have found no measurable effect of structured data or llms.txt on AI citations; being mentioned on the sites AI reads is what moves visibility.
Add FAQPage schema only to pages that show the same questions and answers, and spend the rest of your effort on getting mentioned on the roundups, directories and review sites the engines cite for your questions.
Step 3: Structure Content for AI Extraction
Restructure your content so AI engines can extract clean, direct answers:
- Use H2/H3 headings phrased as questions
- Answer each heading immediately with 1–3 direct sentences
- Use numbered lists for process steps
- Use comparison tables for feature/spec comparisons
- Add a TL;DR or Key Takeaways section at the top of long guides
Step 4: Build Topical Authority
AI engines favor domains that demonstrate comprehensive expertise on a subject. Build a content cluster for each core topic:
- One comprehensive pillar page (2,000+ words)
- 5–10 supporting blog posts on related subtopics
- A glossary page defining key terms
- Comparison pages for your category
- All pages interlinked with descriptive anchor text
A three-month plan
Month 1: the technical basics
- Check robots.txt allows the AI search crawlers (GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended)
- Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools
- One-off hygiene: llms.txt, FAQ schema on pages with a visible FAQ, Article schema on posts. Keep it short: controlled tests found no measurable effect on AI citations
- Run the free audit (how the score is calculated)
Month 2: content built around questions
- Rework your most important pages with question headings and a direct answer under each
- Write a glossary of your industry's terms
- Build a pillar page for each of three to five core subjects, with supporting posts
Month 3: being mentioned elsewhere
- List the sites the engines cite for your questions and work to be mentioned on them
- Publish original research or data others can cite
- Contribute to two or three industry publications
