Stop Guessing What Buyers Ask AI — Use Your Search Console Data

Your AI visibility score is computed over the questions you track. If you invented them on a signup form, the score measures an imagined market. Search Console already knows what buyers really ask.

Every AI visibility score has a quiet dependency: the list of questions it's computed over. Track ten questions your buyers actually ask, and the score measures your market. Track ten questions you invented on a signup form, and it measures an imagined one — precisely, consistently, and uselessly.

The guessing problem

Almost every tracking tool starts the same way: "enter the questions your customers might ask." It sounds reasonable and it smuggles in the weakest link. Founders guess the phrasing they'd use, not the phrasing buyers use. Marketers guess aspirational categories. Everyone guesses too close to their own brand vocabulary — and then the score confidently measures visibility for a market that may not exist.

You already own the answer

If your site has any search traffic at all, Google Search Console records the exact phrases people typed before finding you — real demand, in real buyer language, updated continuously. That's evidence most teams already have and never connect to their AI tracking.

Two filters make it usable:

  • Drop the brand searches. They're most of any GSC account and they say nothing about discovery — someone searching your name has already found you. That includes near-brand phrasings that contain your name's letters once spacing is ignored; engines retrieve on letters, so those measure spelling, not reputation.
  • Rank by impressions, not clicks. Clicks measure what you already capture. Impressions measure what people ask — and the phrases you rank badly for are the most interesting input a visibility tool has.

From search phrases to AI questions

Search queries are fragments ("waterproof hiking boots wide feet"); AI questions are sentences ("what are the best waterproof hiking boots for wide feet?"). The fragments aren't the questions — they're the evidence the questions should be built from: which use cases come up, which industries, which words buyers actually use.

This is how AEO Track's question suggestions work with a connected Search Console property: your last 90 days of real, brand-filtered queries ground the suggestions, and the UI shows you the phrases behind each list so you can judge the evidence yourself. No connection? Suggestions fall back to your homepage — connecting just makes them honest.

The self-graded exam

Hand-picked questions drift toward phrasings you already win. A score built on them looks healthy right up until a customer asks the engines a real question and you're nowhere in it.
